Seagull Solar Racing Team is a student engineering program based at Ralph R. McKee CTE High School and Staten Island Technical High School in New York City. As the only high school solar car team in the city, they give underserved students hands-on experience in engineering, renewable energy, and vehicle design. The team also takes part in community events and school outreach to spark interest in STEAM fields.

With support from ARDC, the team will add amateur radio training and equipment to their solar car program. The project will provide VHF and UHF communications for testing and race operations, help 25 to 30 students each year prepare for their FCC licenses, and create simple, open guides that other schools can follow. This work introduces new young operators to amateur radio while improving the safety and reliability of the team’s solar car activities.
