Grant: New Class Opportunities

Date: October 2025
Amount: $7,051

The Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of Connecticut is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and demonstrating the history of radio and electronic communication. Volunteers restore donated equipment, lead hands-on tours, and introduce visitors to amateur radio through the W1VCM club, which offers exams, mentoring, and beginner projects like building simple crystal radios. These activities support the museum’s broader mission to educate the public and spark curiosity about how communications technology has evolved.

The funded project expands the museum’s education program by adding new build-focused classes for older youth. Students will assemble a FM receiver using soldering and basic electronic techniques, with an optional 40-meter version for those interested in amateur radio. The program will also support scouting merit badges and maintain small class sizes for guided instruction. Grant funds will cover the materials needed to launch these classes and extend learning opportunities for teens interested in electronics.
