Grant: GNU Radio 4 for Everyone

Date: March 2026
Amount: $258,000

GNU Radio is a free & open-source software development toolkit that provides signal processing blocks to implement software radios. It can be used with readily-available low-cost external RF hardware to create software-defined radios, or without hardware in a simulation-like environment. It is widely used in research, industry, academia, government, and hobbyist environments to support both wireless communications research and real-world radio systems.

This project aims to enhance GNU Radio 4 (GR4), a major architectural upgrade to the widely used open-source SDR framework. While GR4 offers major improvements in performance, modern data processing and deployability, it currently primarily serves enterprise and research environments.

The project seeks to restore the accessibility features that made GNU Radio successful in education and amateur experimentation. It will add graphical tools, packaging and Python support as well as a DVB-S2 reference waveform for satellite communications experimentation.
