Grant: Engineering Undergraduate Senior Project Support
Grant Date: June 2021
Amount: $2,000
This grant supports the Case Amateur Radio Club W8EDU at Case Western Reserve University in beginning a support fund for undergraduate engineering and physics students’ senior projects which directly involve amateur radio and Club activities. The engineering senior project program is a degree requirement for these students and is part of American Board of Engineering Training accreditation for the curricula; projects involve groups of two to four students and provide an introduction to engineering teamwork and innovation. Examples include GPS-disciplining of amateur radio transceivers that do not have manufacturer’s support of external frequency reference, and minimization of electronics expense in the NASA Jove citizen-research project through use of software defined radios (SDRs).
ARDC awarded grant funds for a pilot program that provides $500 per student completing a project that has an amateur radio component. Four projects will be performed under the direct supervision of Radio Club officers (including the faculty advisor).
Students working on supported projects will have access to The Case Amateur Radio Club as a laboratory facility. The Club is part of CWRU engineering and general education curriculum and has produced undergraduate research plus master’s theses and NSF-funded doctoral-level research.
