Grant: Support and development of the SondeHub platform

Grant date: October 2021
Amount: $8,300

SondeHub is a revolutionary meteorological weather balloon monitoring platform supported by global crowdsourcing. It is run by volunteers as a community service and encourages a larger audience to get involved with amateur radio. SondeHub’s innovative approach improves upon the traditional software in a beautiful and usable way. Because the software is open source, it is accessible without charge to anyone with a desktop computer, laptop computer, or a mobile device. The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) and Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) use SondeHub to supplement their data-gathering operations.

This grant, fiscally sponsored by the Amateur Radio Experimenters Group, will provide operating funds for SondeHub for the next 12 months and allow the development team to extend the SondeHub platform. The funds will allow the group to increase data rates, improve data quality, and allow the system to record data from amateur radio balloon flights.
