Grant: M17 Project Popularization, Research and Development

Date: September 2022
Amount: $228,900

The M17 Project is developing a new digital communications protocol, similar to D-STAR or DMR, but fully open source, for the amateur radio community.

This grant is intended to advance all aspects of the project, including:

  • Reflector protocol and linking.
  • Packet mode.
  • File transfer.
  • Publishing research papers
  • Getting the protocol through an official standardization process.
  • Developing open hardware implementations that support M17.
  • Repeater maintenance.

Deutscher Amateur-Radio-Club (DARC e.V.) took on fiscal sponsorship for the scope of this grant in 2022. The M17 Project was originally awarded for $250,000 in 2021 with Open Research Institute as fiscal sponsor. The $228,000 amount listed here reflects the amount of funds transferred to DARC to continue the project, especially its EU-based endeavors.
