Grant: Scholarships for Hampton University students

Date: April 2022

Amount: $200,748

Hampton University is a comprehensive institution of higher education, dedicated to the promotion of learning, building of character and preparation of promising students for positions of leadership and service. The mission of the Hampton University’s School of Engineering and Technology focuses on serving a segment of the U.S. population that has traditionally not had access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. The School of Engineering and Technology is committed to serving as a catalyst to recruit and retain talented African American and female students who pursue research careers in materials science and engineering fields. Also, Hampton seeks to ensure that higher educational opportunities in engineering and technology are available to African Americans, as well as to inform the community of significant contributions made to the profession by African Americans and all ethnic minorities. Using the University’s resources and our current platform of a uniquely designed and equipped professional television studio and control room, a live FM radio station (WHOV 88.1 MHz) with digital streaming to the Internet, five media labs, high-tech classrooms equipped with state-ofthe-art Promethean boards, Hampton students gain an in-depth knowledge of professional industry programs. By the third year of classes, STEM students have taken classes in digital systems, engineering electronics, electromagnetic waves, signals and system, circuit simulation, modern analog and digital communications systems. Students from the School of Engineering also participate in Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) activities.

This grant will provide scholarship assistance to four students for one full academic year and assist with numerous students’ gaps in tuition and associated costs for attendance at Hampton University. More than 88% of Hampton University undergraduates receive some measure of financial assistance which is why funding for unrestricted and current-use scholarships is vital to keeping students on track to obtaining a high-quality education. Scholarship recipients will be encouraged to interact with internal radio personnel and peers and pursue interests in STEM careers by exposure to radio science technology through amateur radio. Additionally, Hampton University will ensure the programming schedule for the radio station includes one-hour long educational segments which will highlight scholars studying STEM topics.
