Grant: SFC Renewal Proposal for Copyleft Enforcement

Date: February 2023
Amount: $339,000

Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) is a New York-based 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that focuses on advancing the software freedom movement. They advance this mission by supporting community-driven alternatives to employing proprietary software and furthering the development and use of free software by presenting practical initiatives. SFC is also involved in licensing and project governance policy, fiscal sponsorship(s), and public advocacy. The SFC’s most significant licensing policy work includes defending and upholding the terms and conditions of copyleft licenses, such as the GNU General Public License (GPL), thus protecting the rights of software users and consumers under said license. Previous support from initial funding allowed for significant success in reaching their goal of widespread copyleft compliance.

This grant funds a one-year extension of SFC’s Copyleft and GPL Enforcement project, empowering the continuation of educating the community on copyleft licensing and encouraging more developers to seek and utilize appropriate licensing for their future projects.
