Grant: System Hardening and Equipment Upgrade

Date: February 2023
Amount: $28,916

The SkyHubLink System is an all-mode amateur radio communication system with RF coverage from repeater sites around the state of Colorado and network coverage around the world. The organization is devoted to providing reliable amateur radio communications, supporting educational activities in the field of wireless, and supporting disaster-recovery and emergency situations. All members are volunteers dedicated to helping the public amateur radio community.

This grant will allow the group to upgrade their equipment so that it will last longer and require less maintenance. Upgrading the infrastructure will help keep the system running for many years to support communications for public safety, scientific, and educational needs. The grant will also provide for an upgrade for their main data center hub at the data center and to purchase a portable repeater for event support.

Update

After receiving their grant in spring 2023, the SkyHubLink team, a Colorado-based amateur radio repeater linking system, launched their first major project: building radio infrastructure for the 2023 Courage Classic bicycle fundraiser, which spans remote mountain passes with limited cellular service. They installed five repeaters, including two solar-powered units, ensuring full radio coverage along the race route for the first time. This upgrade replaced the previous, unreliable simplex communication, improving safety and efficiency by enabling instant coordination for race officials and support teams.

The project also involved upgrading and hardening the SkyHubLink repeater system, which includes over 20 repeaters, some newly installed or repaired. This expanded network, combining analog and digital systems, provides near state-wide coverage across Colorado and has attracted new amateur radio operators. The improved infrastructure also supports reliable communication during severe weather events and special operations. Seven Motorola Quantar, Yaesu DR-2X, and Kenwood TKR-851 repeaters were deployed alongside necessary components to replace outdated equipment and build new repeater sites.

SkyHubLink now receives between 20 and 50 unique users daily, many of whom are new hams seeking guidance. It has also provided hands-on experience through its installation projects, where an estimated 30 to 50 individuals contributed across more than 20 events. Participants gained practical experience through both physical installations and software support, helping them develop technical skills. One young operator, encouraged by their involvement in a site installation, was even inspired to pursue an Electrical Engineering degree.
