Grant: The Amateur Radio Station of the Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of Connecticut (W1VCM) Antenna Enhancement

Date: March 2023
Amount: $15,300

The Amateur Radio Station of the Vintage Radio and Communications Museum of Connecticut (W1VCM) is a volunteer organization focused on educating the general public about the history of communication methods while emphasizing the relevance of amateur radio. They maintain static displays, preserve working contemporary and antique items, lead guided tours of the museum, participate in public outreach, and provide internship opportunities. Currently, W1VCM has limited hamshack capabilities, which affects the visitor experience in accessing amateur radio bands and satellite communications.

This grant will provide funding to build both a lightening-protected HF antenna system and an exhibit for amateur satellite communications on both 70cm and 2m. The antenna upgrades will allow for operations across all frequencies available to U.S. amateur ratio operators, and the satellites will provide visitors the opportunity to participate in earth-space communications with amateur radio.
