Grant: HAMtastic Radio Technology Camp: Extending Communication from Tennessee to the World
Date: March 2024
Amount: $26,970
Walters State Community College (WSCC), established in 1970, is a higher education institution predominantly serving 10 counties in East Tennessee and expanding service to other surrounding counties, enriching the lives of both their students and their community. In addition to certificate and degree programs, WSCC’s Division of Workforce Training (WFT) offers non-credit programs to support workforce training and enhance professional development. An example of one of the WFT training programs is the HAMtastic Radio Technology Camp, a program offered to youth and young adults.
This grant will provide funding for WSCC to host the inaugural HAMtastic Radio Technology Camps to take place during the summers of 2024 and 2025, as well as conduct one year of HAMtastic sessions via WSCC’s Talented and Gifted (TAG) program in 2025. As a result of this funding, participants will expand their knowledge about amateur radio and communications. They will have the opportunity, upon successful completion of camp, to take the Technician class license exam, thus expanding the hobby in their region. Participants will increase their STEM skill set via many hands-on learning experiences.
