Grant: Enhancing STEM Education on the High Seas: Upgrading ICOM 735 for Scout Programs
Date: March 2025
Amount: $7,000
Parents of 1776 Organization exists to further youth education through Scouting America’s Scout BSA (Boys ages 10-17) and Sea Scouting programs (Coed ages 13-21). The organization strives to prepare young men and women for future success by building leadership and career skills.
Local parents are looking for STEM educational opportunities for their teenagers to help them be competitive in an globally-competitive job market. The Parents of 1776 Organization has a sailboat that can be transformed into an always-available floating classroom for teaching radio, programming and digital technology. They have previously taught the Rowing merit badge and the California Online Boating Safety Course – this success has encouraged them to branch out into other merit badge instruction.
Parents of 1776 received ARDC funding to transform their sailboat into a floating classroom for Scouts. The grant supports the installation of modern amateur equipment, a satellite internet system, and a digital radar. These upgrades will enable hands-on STEM education, merit badge instruction, and technical skill building. The program includes regular activities and outreach based out of Alameda California’s Grand Marina.
