Grant: RAQI High School amateur radio course V2

Date: May 2026
Amount: $27,862 CAD

La Fédération des clubs radioamateurs du Québec (RAQI) has supported amateur radio operators across the province since 1951. Its mission is to promote interest in radio, offer training and events, and represent amateurs to the government. Today, RAQI is a dynamic and active organization with thousands of members. It regularly organizes events, competitions, and training sessions. It is also involved in public service projects, such as emergency communication in the event of a natural disaster.

This grant supports the RAQI Schools Project, an initiative that offers a comprehensive turnkey solution for schools to establish an extracurricular amateur radio program, led by a dedicated teaching resource. This all-in-one package includes high-quality radios and antennas, supplemented by a specialized workbook and a comprehensive study guide. Both resources were authored by active education professionals, ensuring the curriculum is pedagogically sound and ready for the classroom. The program is primarily designed to enhance scientific knowledge in areas such as radio waves, propagation, frequency management, and the regulations governing amateur radio bands in Canada. This technical foundation is paired with several engaging activities designed to bring these concepts to life.

For example, students participate in ‘transmitter hunts,’ where they locate hidden signals using directional antennas they have built themselves. We also feature a ‘Battleship’ game where coordinates are transmitted via Morse code. Additionally, the curriculum includes weather balloon launches that collect pressure and temperature data while transmitting high-altitude GPS coordinates using the APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) protocol. All of this content is already fully developed and will be provided alongside the equipment and various club-led projects.

This initiative is supported by local clubs, which offer hands-on mentorship for student activities. Furthermore, students will join a province-wide Quebec youth radio club, allowing them to connect and share experiences with peers across the province.
