Grant: Building Open-Source, Programmable Backscatter Radio for Ultra-Low Power Wireless Communication

Date: February 2023
Amount: $176,642

The University of Pittsburgh is a top-ranked, public institution in Pennsylvania and a member of the Association of American Universities of leading research universities. The university is recognized as one of the most innovative universities in the world.

This project, led by Dr. Longfei Shangguan, a faculty member in the Computer Science Department, has three major objectives:

  1. Design a unified, programmable backscatter radio front-end.
  2. Evaluate the efficacy of PCB prototype in generating different types of backscatter signals through comprehensive benchmark studies.
  3. Integrate a PCB-based radio front-end with commodity IoT devices and conduct long-term field studies.
